🚧 Common Problems

Skid Steer & CTL Issues We Fix

If you're seeing any of these on your Bobcat or other-brand SSL/CTL, bring it in before it becomes a major rebuild. Most are catchable early.

Won't Start / No Crank

Seat-bar interlock, keyless ignition, key fob, battery, fuel system, ACS controller, or ECU codes — we read codes and isolate the actual cause instead of throwing parts at it.

Weak Lift / Slow Bucket

Lift arms stalling under load or slow cylinder speed usually means pump wear, relief valve issues, or contaminated hydraulic oil — pressure testing identifies the cause.

Hydraulic Cylinder Drift

Lift arms or tilt drifting down when held, visible weeping at the rod — seal kit or cylinder honing usually solves it.

Hydraulic Fluid Loss

Puddles under the machine, sluggish steering, or auxiliary flow problems — classic hose, fitting, or seal failure. Caught early it's a quick fix.

Pulls to One Side / Uneven Travel

Drive motor wear, final drive issues, or track tension out of spec on a CTL — diagnostic and tension calibration usually identifies the fix.

Tracks Slipping or Wearing Fast

Tracks slipping sprockets, uneven wear, missing lugs, or worn rollers and idlers — full undercarriage measurement and replacement of what's actually worn.

DPF Regeneration Failures

Tier 4 emissions derate, repeated forced regens, DPF differential pressure faults — cleaning, forced regen procedures, and DEF system diagnostics on Bobcat M / R / R2-Series and others.

Erratic Joystick / ACS Controls

Drift, dead zones, unresponsive ACS controls, or pattern switch failures — pilot valve service, joystick rebuild, and controller diagnostics.

Bob-Tach Won't Latch

Manual or Power Bob-Tach not engaging, attachment couplers not flowing — coupler service or Power Bob-Tach hydraulic repair.

Overheating

Radiator, hydraulic oil cooler, fan, debris buildup, or thermostat issues — full cooling system diagnostic and service.

Find a Location 1-888-380-6420
Is Carleton Equipment a Bobcat-authorized service dealer?
Yes. Carleton Equipment is Michigan's #1 Bobcat dealer and a factory-authorized service and warranty center. Our technicians are Factory Platinum Certified on the full Bobcat S-series skid steer and T-series compact track loader lineup, with access to factory diagnostic tools, OEM parts, and technical service bulletins.
Do you service brands other than Bobcat?
Yes. Bobcat is our specialty, but our shops service all major SSL and CTL makes: Caterpillar, John Deere, Kubota SSV/SVL, Case, ASV, Takeuchi, New Holland, Gehl, Mustang, and JCB. We're also factory-authorized for DEVELON (Doosan) and Kubota warranty.
Can you do warranty work on my Bobcat?
Yes. We're authorized for both standard manufacturer warranty and Bobcat Protection Plus extended warranty repairs. Bring proof of purchase and warranty docs, or include them with your service request. We also handle warranty for DEVELON and Kubota.
Can you replace the rubber tracks on my CTL?
Yes. We stock and install Bobcat OEM rubber tracks for the full T-series lineup, plus aftermarket and OEM tracks for all other major CTL brands. Full undercarriage service includes bottom rollers, top rollers, front idlers, recoil springs, and drive sprockets. Free wear inspection comes with any service visit.
My Bobcat won't start — can you fix it?
Yes. No-start is one of the most common Bobcat diagnostic calls. Common causes include seat-bar interlock, keyless ignition or key fob, battery, fuel system, ACS controller faults, or ECU codes. We diagnose with Bobcat factory tools instead of guessing.
How long does a skid steer or CTL repair take?
Turnaround depends on the repair, parts availability, and current shop load. Simple repairs (hoses, sensors, fluid service) are often same-day. Major work like pump rebuilds, undercarriage replacement, or engine work typically takes 3-10 business days. Machine-down emergencies are prioritized.
My DPF keeps regenerating — can you fix it?
Yes. Repeated active or forced regens usually indicate either an underlying engine problem causing excess soot, or a DPF that needs cleaning. Our techs are trained on Tier 4 emissions across the Bobcat M / R / R2-Series and the other major brands, and can diagnose the root cause, perform forced regen procedures, clean or replace the DPF, and handle DEF/SCR diagnostics.
Will my warranty be preserved?
Yes. As the authorized Bobcat dealer (plus DEVELON and Kubota), all repairs performed with genuine OEM parts and factory procedures fully preserve your standard and extended warranty coverage. We're also authorized to perform warranty repair on your behalf.
Do you do pre-purchase inspections?
Yes. Before you buy a used skid steer or compact track loader, we perform an independent inspection covering hydraulics, undercarriage measurement, pin bore wear, engine diagnostics, and structural condition. You get a written report with photos so you know exactly what you're buying.
Can you come to my jobsite?
Yes. Our fully equipped mobile service trucks dispatch anywhere in Michigan for on-site SSL/CTL repair, including portable line boring, hydraulic repair, welding, Tier 4 diagnostics, and emergency machine-down response.
How much will my repair cost?
Repairs are billed on a labor + parts basis (plus travel for field calls). We always provide a written estimate before starting work, and won't exceed it without contacting you. Cost depends on the specific repair, parts required, and complexity. Submit a request and we'll give you a ballpark.
