★ Why Rebuild with Us

Full-Service Cylinder Shop

Hydraulic cylinder rebuild isn't a parts swap — it's disassembly, inspection, parts sourcing, and pressure testing. We coordinate every step of the rebuild at our Michigan shops, sending out for honing or rechroming when the barrel or rod requires it.

Honing & Rechroming (Sent Out)

When a scored barrel or pitted rod needs more than a reseal can fix, we coordinate honing and rechroming through our machining partners — we manage the process start to finish.

Rod Replacement

Pitted, scored, or bent rods replaced with new chrome rod. Rod replacement is the most reliable fix when the existing rod is beyond economical restoration.

OEM & Premium Seal Kits

Genuine Bobcat, DEVELON, and Kubota OEM seal kits for warranty work, plus premium aftermarket options (Hercules, Trelleborg) for older or custom cylinders.

Pressure Tested

Every rebuilt cylinder is pressure-tested on our hydraulic stand to working pressure before it leaves the shop — not just visually inspected.

Pin Bore Line Boring

If the rod-end or barrel-end pin bores are worn oblong, we can line bore them back to spec while the cylinder is apart — one-stop fix.

Pickup & Mobile R&R

Drop just the cylinder at any location, or our mobile trucks remove and reinstall on-site — you don't have to bring the whole machine in.

⚠ Signs You Need a Rebuild

Cylinder Failure Symptoms

Cylinders rarely fail all at once. If you're noticing any of these, it's time for a rebuild — catching it early often means just a seal kit instead of a full barrel replacement.

Cylinder Drift

Boom, arm, bucket, or lift cylinder slowly creeps down when held. Internal seal bypass past the piston.

External Oil Leak

Visible oil weeping at the rod or gland end, oil on the cylinder, daily fluid loss. Failed rod or wiper seal.

Scored or Pitted Rod

Visible gouges, chrome flaking, rust pits, or rough patches on the cylinder rod. Will eat new seals quickly if not addressed.

Bent Rod

Cylinder won't stroke smoothly, binds in mid-travel, or visibly off-axis. Impact damage or overload — rod replacement needed.

Slow or Weak Function

Cylinder won't reach full force, stalls under load, or moves slower than the others. Often internal bypass.

Hot Cylinder / Hot Oil

Hydraulic fluid overheating, cylinder body running hot. Internal leakage burns energy as heat.

Worn Pin Bores

Oblong holes at the rod-end or barrel-end mounts, audible knocking under load. Line bore while the cylinder is apart.

Damaged End Caps / Eyes

Cracks at the rod-end clevis, broken lug, mushroomed pin holes. Welding and machining repair.

⚡ How It Works

Our Cylinder Rebuild Process

Five steps from disassembly to pressure test — the same process whether your cylinder is from a 1-ton mini or a 16-ton class machine.

1

Disassemble & Inspect

Cylinder cleaned and torn down. Rod, barrel, piston, and end caps measured and inspected for wear, scoring, or damage.

2

Quote & Approve

Written estimate covering parts and machining required. You approve before any further work begins.

3

Refinish & Restore

Rod replaced if needed. Barrel honing or rod rechroming is sent out when required. Pin bores line bored, end caps welded as needed.

4

Reassemble with New Seals

OEM or premium seal kit installed, cylinder reassembled to factory torque specs, surfaces protected.

5

Pressure Test & Return

Cycled and pressure-tested on our hydraulic stand to working pressure. Inspected, tagged, and returned or reinstalled.

Cylinder Rebuild

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about hydraulic cylinder rebuild cost, turnaround, brands we work on, and the difference between a reseal and a full rebuild.

Find a Location 1-888-380-6420
How much does a hydraulic cylinder rebuild cost?
Cost varies widely — a simple seal kit on a small bucket cylinder can be a few hundred dollars, while a major rebuild with new rod, honed barrel, and pin bore line boring on a large excavator boom cylinder can be several thousand. We always provide a written estimate after disassembly and inspection before any work proceeds.
How long does a cylinder rebuild take?
Simple reseals typically turn in 2-4 business days if parts are in stock. Rebuilds requiring rod rechrome, machining, or custom seal kits can take 1-2 weeks. Bring it in early in the week for the fastest turnaround — or call ahead for emergency scheduling.
What's the difference between a reseal and a full rebuild?
A reseal swaps the wear items: rod seal, piston seal, wiper, O-rings, and backup rings. A full rebuild includes rod replacement, end-cap welding, pin bore line boring if needed, and sending out for barrel honing or rod rechroming when the metal requires it. Whether you need just a reseal depends on how worn the rod and barrel are — we'll measure and tell you honestly.
Do I have to bring the whole machine?
No. You can drop just the cylinder off at any of our 7 locations. For machines that can't easily be cylinder-out, our mobile service trucks can remove and reinstall on-site, then ship the cylinder to our shop.
What brands of cylinders do you work on?
All major equipment brands — Bobcat, DEVELON (Doosan), Kubota, Caterpillar, John Deere, Yanmar, Takeuchi, Volvo, JCB, plus industrial and fabrication cylinders. We carry OEM seal kits for the brands we're authorized for, and premium aftermarket kits (Hercules, Trelleborg) for everything else.
Will my warranty be preserved?
For machines under Bobcat, DEVELON, or Kubota warranty, rebuilds performed with genuine OEM seal kits and factory procedures fully preserve coverage. We're also authorized to perform warranty cylinder repair on your behalf.
Can you build a custom replacement cylinder?
Yes. If the original cylinder is beyond economical repair or is no longer available from the OEM, we can spec and source a custom-built replacement — matching bore, stroke, mounting, port size, and pressure rating to your application.
Why does my cylinder keep leaking after a reseal?
Usually because the rod or barrel is worn beyond what new seals can accommodate. A scored rod will chew up wiper and rod seals in 50-200 hours. Proper repair means rod replacement (or sending out for rechrome) and barrel honing along with the new seals — not just dropping new seals into a worn cylinder.
Do you pressure test every cylinder?
Yes — every rebuilt cylinder is cycled and pressure-tested on our hydraulic test stand to working pressure before it leaves the shop. We won't ship a cylinder that hasn't proven itself on the stand first.
